"Dune: Part Two" has been postponed to 2024, extending the tale of Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, to continue on March 15.
Warner Bros. made this announcement on Thursday, following a report from Variety last month that revealed the company's consideration of a 2024 release date for the prominent sci-fi movie. "Dune: Part Two" was co-produced by Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Film Group, necessitating mutual agreement on the revised release date.
As part of this schedule adjustment, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," originally slated for March 14, will now hit theaters on April 12. This film, also a product of Legendary and Warner Bros., is the latest installment in the Monsterverse franchise.
The decision to delay "Dune" coincides with the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The SAG-AFTRA strike has led to restrictions on actors participating in press activities for struck films. Consequently, the star-studded ensemble of "Dune" would have been unable to engage in the promotional circuit for this high-budget film.
This shift is not expected to significantly impact IMAX, as they have a lineup of fall titles, including "The Equalizer 3," "Wonka," and "The Marvels" (assuming no changes to these release dates). Both Warner Bros. and Legendary are confident that the spring break for students and the Easter holiday next year will offer ample opportunity for the success of both films.
Alongside Chalamet, the cast of "Dune: Part Two" features Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux, and more.
Warner Bros. had been contemplating potential 2024 delays for "The Color Purple" (originally set for Dec. 25) and "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" (initially planned for Dec. 20). However, the studio intends to maintain these December dates for both films.
Sony is the sole other major studio to defer multiple movie releases due to the ongoing strikes. Last month, the company rescheduled "Kraven the Hunter" and a sequel to "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" to 2024.
Additionally, they removed "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" from the release calendar. Furthermore, another Zendaya-starring movie, MGM's "Challengers," a tennis drama featuring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor, was also postponed to the coming year.
