BREAKING: NECO releases 2023 SSCE results, says 93 schools involved in cheating

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the results of the 2023 Internal Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE). This announcement was made by Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NECO, on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

According to the report, a notable 61.60 percent of the candidates achieved a commendable feat by securing at least five credits, including English and Mathematics in their results. This achievement is a significant milestone for these students.

However, the report also reveals a concerning aspect of the examination. A total of 93 schools were implicated in cases of examination malpractice. Such malpractices undermine the integrity of the educational system and the value of the certificates issued.

Furthermore, the report indicates that 52 supervisors involved in the examination process have been recommended for blacklisting. Their actions, characterized by poor supervision and aiding and abetting malpractice during the examinations, have raised serious concerns.

In response to these issues, the erring schools will be summoned to the Council for a discussion on the matter. Appropriate sanctions will then be applied to address these infractions and ensure accountability.

The statistics for the 2023 NECO examinations are as follows: A total of 1,196,985 candidates participated, comprising 616,398 males and 580,587 females. Notably, 1,543 candidates with special needs took part in the examinations, showcasing the commitment to inclusivity in the educational system.

The breakdown of candidates with special needs is as follows:

- 913 candidates with hearing impairment

- 162 candidates with visual impairment

- 103 candidates with Albinism

- 61 candidates with Autism

- 149 candidates with low vision

- 154 candidates with Adermatoglyphia (candidates with no fingerprints)

Among the candidates who sat for the exams, an impressive 737,308, which represents 61.60 percent of the total, secured five credits and above. Additionally, 1,013,611 candidates, equivalent to 84.68 percent of the total, achieved five credits regardless of their performance in English and Mathematics.

In summary, while there are reasons to celebrate the success of a significant number of candidates in the 2023 NECO examinations, it is imperative to address the issue of examination malpractice firmly to preserve the credibility and fairness of the education system.
