Kayrros, an environmental intelligence company, has successfully identified the world's 1,300 largest methane-polluting sites through satellite surveillance. This groundbreaking effort sheds light on urgent environmental concerns while presenting a significant opportunity for targeted action.


The satellite surveillance provided by Kayrros has pinpointed exact sources of potent methane emissions, offering a newfound ability to address the issue precisely. Antoine Rostand, co-founder of Kayrros, emphasized the significance of this advancement, stating that it goes beyond measuring methane in the atmosphere; now, the exact origins are known.


The investigation into these methane leaks has led Kayrros to various sources, including gas wells, pipelines, coal mines, and waste sites in countries such as Turkmenistan, India, Russia, Australia, and the United States. Armed with information on the "who" and "where," targeted reduction strategies can now be implemented.


Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, can influence Earth's temperature. Although it only persists in the atmosphere for about a decade, its impact is intense during that time. Addressing methane leaks can have an immediate positive effect on slowing temperature rises, improving air quality, and safeguarding public health.


Initiatives like national methane monitoring and repair policies in the U.S. are expected to eliminate 58 million tons of toxic gas over 15 years. Moreover, over 150 world governments have joined the Global Methane Pledge, aiming to reduce methane output by 30% by 2030, potentially preventing over 250,000 heat-related deaths annually.
