The Member representing Mayo Belwa constituency at the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Mahmud Musa Kallamu, on Saturday, held maiden edition of townhall meeting in his constituency.
The event which was hosted by the new lawmaker created an opportunity where he extensively interacted with his electorate on their immediate needs.
During the event, individuals, organisations and representatives of political wards including Ndikong, Gengle, Yoffo, Mbilla and Ribadu presented their immediate needs to the member for consideration and implementation.
Among the basic needs of individuals and organisations include: the need for provision of water supply, rehabilitation of rural feeder road, electrification, renovation of public schools, financial support to students, youth and women empowerment among others.
Interestingly, the event also reflected on the remarkable achievements recorded by the lawmaker when he was representing the constituency from 2011 to 2015 and 2015 to 2019 respectively.
Interacting with his constituents during the event, the convener and member representing Mayo Belwa constituency, Hon. Mahmud Musa Kallamu, thanked them for giving him another mandate to represent them.
Hon. Kallamu, reflected on some major achievements he had recorded in the past while at the assembly, saying that he had drilled boreholes, constructed culverts, donated instructional materials, free medical services and several others.
He told the gathering that his concern is not to enrich himself but provide people oriented legislation and pledged to consolidate on the gains he had recorded for his electorate.
He stated that it is important for lawmakers to know the needs of their people and educate them about the works of legislators.
He said he wants to set a precedence in good representation, assuring that he will take his time and stay with constituents in Mayo Belwa so as not to create a gap between him and his electorate.
In his paper entitled, " The role of the legislator in the democratic set up", Dr. Babalola Sikiru Jimoh, of the Economics Department, Modibbo Adama University, Yola, said that the responsibility of the legislators is enacting laws.
Dr. Jimoh, explained that the lawmakers are to make laws, peform representative duty because they are eyes of their constituents, duty to government, allegiance to the party, oversight function and townhall meetings.
According to him, the electorate feel that they are entitled to benefits directly from their representarives, and applauded him for focusing on human development, education and infrastructural development.
On his part, Abubakar Mohammed Gurin from the Centre for Women and Adolescent Empowerment, had while speaking on transparency and accountability, said that many electorate do not know the functions of the legislator.
Likewise, in his paper, "Bridging the Gab Between the Govern and the Government, Consolidation on Previous Achievements, a Lecturer from Adamawa State University Mubi, Desmon Decklan, harped on the need for inclusion of all in the scheme of things.
In his goodwill message, the Senator representing Adamawa southern Senatorial District, Binos Yaroe, applauded Hon. Kallamu for organising a historic event to interact with his electorate on their immediate need.
In his welcome address, the Chairman PDP Mayo Belwa LGA, Hammanjoda Bashir, who represented by his vice, Hon. Samaila Amos, appreciated the participants for their time.
He said that the party is proud of him for holding maiden edition of townhall meeting, assuring that the party is ready to give him necessary support to succeed.
